Fulfilling the Government’s objective to reduce the current heavy dependence on road transport while providing ease of travel for residents in the northern states of Perak, Kedah, Penang and Perlis, the Electrified Double Tracking Project (Ipoh – Padang Besar) is among the country’s largest public infrastructure undertakings that holds the key for future reduction in national petrol consumption alluding to savings in petrol subsidies and decrease in carbon emissions.

Spanning 329km, the project links Ipoh in Perak to the northern end of the country at Padang Besar in Perlis, reinforcing the national rail system’s ability to provide speedier and more efficient inter-city travel.

It will also increase the accessibility of major cities and commercial hubs for locals and foreigners, while greatly reduces road accident statistics, especially during festive seasons.

Scope of works for EDTP (Ipoh – Padang Besar) include the design and construction of two new parallel electrified tracks to replace the existing single track, stations, bridges, as well as modern electrification and signalling systems.

This RM12.485 billion project is expected to be completed by November 2014, and will provide a tremendous economic multiplier effect in the four states of Perak, Kedah, Penang and Perlis.
