- A 7km stormwater tunnel to contain
and divert flood water out and
into a storage reservoir.
- A 3km motorway integrated with
the stormwater tunnel to provide
an alternate route for motorists
entering and exiting the southern
gateway of Kuala Lumpur.
Three-mode operation:
The SMART system works on the three-mode
principle of operation based on
flood discharge and operation status
of the motorway.

SMART has additional safety features that are
unique over and above the features seen in a
normal motorway tunnel.
Safety Features
Gamuda sold the concept of SMART to the Malaysian
Government on the strength that it was an innovative
yet practical and affordable solution to mitigate
flooding and traffic congestion problems in
central Kuala Lumpur.
Studies undertaken showed concentration at
the confluence of major rivers during heavy
rainfall, causing recurring flooding in the
city. SMART was designed to divert flood water
from entering this critical location of the
confluence via a holding basin, storage reservoir
and a bypass tunnel.
